Catching the Train to Toodyay
Leave the car at home and let the train take you into the Avon Valley. Transwa’s rail services link Perth with Toodyay in roughly an hour and a half, with views of rolling farmland, bushland and river country along the way.
It’s a relaxed way to arrive for a day trip or a weekend stay, and you can step off the train and start exploring.
Getting from Perth to Toodyay by Train
Toodyay is served by Transwa’s AvonLink, MerredinLink and Prospector trains. The AvonLink runs between Midland and Northam, while the MerredinLink and Prospector depart from East Perth. All of them stop at Toodyay.
Services run only on certain days of the week, so check the current timetable before you plan your trip. Bookings can be made online with Transwa, by phone on 1300 662 205, or through the Toodyay Visitor Centre.
Highlights on the way to Toodyay
The trip itself is part of the experience. Whether you board at Midland or East Perth, the line heads out through the Avon Valley, with bushland, farmland and river country along the way. Here are a few things to look out for.
Midland
Midland is the starting point for AvonLink passengers and an easy connection from the Transperth network. A Transwa ticket can be used on Transperth trains on the same day, so you can get to the station by suburban train.
Avon Valley National Park
The line runs through the Avon Valley, with bushland, granite outcrops and river views. Wildflowers add colour in spring, and the greens are best in winter.
Canola Fields
In spring the paddocks turn bright yellow. They’re one of the best sights from the window, so keep an eye out the window during spring time.
Arriving in Toodyay
Toodyay station is right in town, so you can step off the train and walk to the cafes, the historic walking tour and the river.
Planning your Train Trip
Before you travel, check the Transwa timetable, as services don’t run every day, and make a note of the return times so you don’t miss the last train home. The station is in town, so you can explore on foot, but it’s worth booking ahead, especially on weekends and during spring. You can fit Toodyay into a full day, but staying overnight gives you time to explore properly.
